For some reason Kubuntu users seems able to run 'Update Manager' without
the 100% CPU issue. Otherwise I agree: this bug is a showstopper for the
average (non-geek) user.

Since installing Karmic alpha-4 no more support for Samsung ML-1640

Only way to fix was to install the proprietary driver from Samsung,
which is very tedious.

I can confirm that. Shutdown hangs with message: "Checking for running

Running "sudo dpkg-reconfigure unattended-upgrades" and selecting "no"
doesn't fix the problem.

Well, since I don't have gdm, it can't be the solution here. I tried to
edit /etc/init.d/halt (rmmod ndiswrapper) too - no success. Funny thing
is, that moving the cursor around during the logout process sometimes
works

Well, since I don't have that section in xorg.conf it can hardly be
the culprit. The problem persists - at random. The workaround is

Using ati driver. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace doesn't kill X. Must use the "elephant
sequence" to reboot safely. Adding "acpi=force" to kernel line in grub makes no
difference.
