At least in my case this seems to be an nvidia bug. I found in the nvidia forums: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=114858 I tried their suggested temporary fix: nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=0 -a GlyphCache=1 They say this will be fixed in a future driver release.
