In my case I got this error because there was no free space on /.
I think the problem was that on all cases, and the bug should be closed.

Same problem here with a Toshiba Satellite A300 PSAGCE-04Q00WCE and a
fresh and updated karmic.
Resuming from suspend works OK, and I can control the LCD britness, but
not the fan.
The things I've tried:

archive..., in the dialog that appears would be nice if there is a
option to create password-protected zip.

2.14.2-0ubuntu1 and the problem seems to be resolved.
