I moved to later versions of Ubuntu, so I can't reproduce this issue.
I use intrepid (1.1.16) on the server side now.
For clients it's a mix of intrepid and jaunty rdiff clients.
They all work fine now.

Looks like printing the original PDF to a new PDF using printer
CUPS/postscript-color-printer-rev4 triggered another bug.
A few seconds after printing, the harddisk is becoming heavily used, the load
goes up, but the CPU usage stays down due to swapping.

I've solved the problem by installing sun-java5-jdk.
sun-java5-jdk provides: java-compiler, java2-compiler
To get back to a clean system I tried to deinstall all java / eclipse
/pydev related packages using:
sudo apt-get autoremove eclipse-pydev sun-java5-jre
As per your request:
sudo apt-get
