After further testing I can safely say that it's not window manager
related. Mutter(gnome-shell), Compiz(unity), metacity(unity) all have
the same problem. I can activate the emulation for the session only and

After running gvfsd in debug mode from the console (DISPLAY=:0
/usr/lib/gvfsd -r) I found out that gvfsd could not get the right uid
for my LDAP users. Googling a bit further I found out that installing
the nscd (Name Service Caching Daemon) would solve that problem. And

I was also able to confirm this bug with gnome-shell on Intel Integrated
Graphics. So maybe its related to compiz.

I have now reverted the patch and reopened this bug. VT_WAITEVENT is
inherently racy, since events that happen between the time we return
from a VT_WAITEVENT and go back into VT_WAITEVENT are completely lost.
That has the effect that when coming back from a suspend sometimes VT
switches are not not

BTW, if somebody cares enough: this bug could be fixed properly now as
Kay's patch got merged into .38.
There's now a file "/sys/class/tty/tty0/active" which you can read to
get the current VT. And you can poll() for it and will get POLLPRI every
time the VT changes.

I think I used grip to rip the CD back then but the id3v1 tags look fine
to me:
