I did some further research.
1. this bug is not present in precise alpha 1 (but the UI has changed since)
2. the color around the screen is always the same as the color around the tabs.
Changing to a theme that has both of these colors same "fixes" this bug (like
the provided high contrast theme
This seems to have been triggered by a combination of settings I have
done in compiz settings manager. Unfortunately I do not know exactly
what cased it, and since I have reset the unity configuration I did not
experience the problem any more.

If I maximize any window, then minimize it, then restore it back, it
gets placed under the top panel. Only maximized windows are not restored
in its previous positions.
Window size does not change, so at the bottom of the screen is a gap

Please do something to fix the problem. This is a basic feature, much

In Ubuntu Feisty Herd 4 (i didn't try previous herd versions) the two
keyboard icons in the new control center are different.
The one in category "Personal" under "Keyboard accessibility" looks old and
ugly.
Then in category "Hardware" under "Keyboard" there is a cool lookin

Notice the swap amount
You can see in the above attachment that xmms is using over 65% of
memory. Usually it uses below 2%. But I wouldn't blame xmms at this
point, because it happens with other apps too.

I've managed to make a "ps aux" and a "top" when this was happening. I
don't see anything suspicious, no process with high cpu usage, but
superkaramba showed 100% cpu usage.
I had to log out and back in to get the computer working normally again.

I found another way to reproduce this bug:
Open the attached .pdf file, and *try* to zoom into 300%
(I use kdpf, but I guess it can be any program).
When going over 200%, the mouse starts lagging, zooming further stops
xmms from playing music, and the system becomes completely unresponsive.
