the Faenza-Ambiance iconset activated which is missing some icons (esp. for the
indicator-messages and indicator-power). No icons, no display. :-)
Just change your theme (in appearance) to something other than you want

So it turns out my kernel file is empty. My bad. I guess I should have
looked a little harder at my temp directory before banging this against
the wall so many times. Now I just need to figure out why bsdtar
extracts the kernel just fine from every other iso I try.
