It isn't really 'invalid' - I think that update-manager could have given
me a clearer error message so I knew what to do instead of wading
through the error logs and guessing - but it seems right to close this
off.

My hunch was right. I manually updated my /etc/apt/sources.list to point to the
Gutsy files and then did a forced update of just the gutsy libc6 2.6.1. It let
me do that. Once that was in place, I was able to use update-manager to
update everything.

After proceeding to download files, it fails with a message stating to report
the error under update-manager and to
include the /var/log/dist-upgrade/ directory of files.

libc6 that is too new (I have libc6 2.6.1-1+b1). I installed this for a
program I was using, but would be ok reverting to either the feisty fawn
or gutsy gibbon versions (both of which are older), but I can't get
