This comment is for those novise like me who mainly want a working
system and are not primarilly looking to fix the bug.

I've had the same problem for as long as I can remember (i.e. since 2006
or so). My solutions so far have been either to convert the document to
djvu-format (using any2djvu) or to read it in okular (former kpdf?),
which does not have this rendering problem.

I'm sorry, I should have been clear on this point to. I think the way you're
supposed to turn of system beep is to go to the menu:
System -> Preferences -> Sound
The right-most sheet of the Sound Preferences window is called System Beep.
Simply click on the Enable system beep check box, in order
Thanks guys. Turning off system beep solved the problem.
I had system beep disabled before upgrading the system so I wasn't
expecting beeps. However, it seems that the upgrade enabled the beep
somehow.

I just found a new way of freezing the system. I opened the Tracker
Search Tool and typed a search word. The tracker displays items 1-10 out
of 27. I push downarrow on the keyboard until i reach item number 10.
One additional keystroke on the downarrow key freezes the system.

I just just upgraded to 8.04 yesterday. What happens is that if I open a
terminal window and hit the tab key or backspace key the whole system
freezes. ctrl-alt-del doesn't work. I have to turn the power off.
This happens also if I don't login to gnome but go directly to tty1
