Output of grep -nH position /etc/modprobe.d only shows the line in alsa-
base.conf, notice it is now commented out:
"/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:44:# options snd-hda-intel
position_fix=1"
So I would assume the position_fix parameter has no affect on the noise.
No matter what I try it still mak
Inconsistent behavior: I found an old post about position so I tried
setting it to "2", no change. Then I tried commenting it out again and
reboot (I always reboot). It did not make the clock applet error this
time. So it is now running without position_fix set but it made no
change in the noise. I
The position_fix=1 is the default setting. I never explicitly set that.
That is how it was set during standard fresh install. No the only noise
I have is the machine-gun rapid fire every 60 seconds.

Yes, I can confirm addling the line:
options snd-hda-intel power_save_controller=N
to file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and rebooting did not resolve the
symptom.
I still have a machine gun every 60 seconds.

Pretty amazing this bug has been occurring since 2007, three years and
nobody has solved it.

Public bug reported:
After upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10, kernel 2.6.35-22-generic, my audio

machine gun popping rapidly for 2-3 seconds. I have tried disabling all
unused devices such as microphones but that doesn't help. I have
