Even if the bug in Virtualbox is fixed, the fact that a bug in a single
application can cause the whole OS to reboot is a very critical bug in
the OS itself, and that needs to be fixed as well

matteo sisti sette, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't
been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
It's been almost a year since this has been reported.
Is there a kernel version I can revert to? I really need to use
virtualbox.

I'm experiencing the same issue.
Is there any workaround?
Disabling 3d and 2d accelaration doesn't work for me.

Hey, the importance of this bug has been wrongly assigned.
It crashes the entire operating system, hence it's critical. This is obvious.

Same probleme for me.
I can run my VM for a while... but sometimes to time, it's rebooting the host.
No logs in Vbox or host!
I know it is Virtual box because when I keep it off, I have no problems for
month.
Soon as I boot the vm, I have an unexpected reboot few days after.
I m running 12.10

This bug also affects me. I've tried installing virtual book versions
4.1.12, 4.1.18, 4.1.22, and 4.2. They have all caused a sudden system
reboot wile installing or starting a VM. I've tried disabling 2d and 3d,
not using usb, not using extensions or additions.
I am installing from amd64 host to
it still crashes during VM. i can use the VM but as soon as i try to
download something or use too much memory it crashes.

Starting from today, whenever I (try to) start a virtual machine in

What graphic card / driver do you use?
I experience the same problem you describe on the machine in my office

Bugs,
I have an NVIDIA card too.
It seems that Nvidia drivers are awfully broken. I also experience sudden xorg
logouts (unrelated to VirtualBox) which I reported and I noticed they have been
triaged as belonging to NVidia drivers.
Also I experience the dreadful ages-old well-known (but for some
Can you test the 3.2.0-23.36 kernel, which can be downloaded from:
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/101221103/linux-image-3.2.0-23-generic_3.2.0-23.36_i386.deb
Download the .deb file. Then you can install it with:

the issue is not 100% systematic.
I can't now.
Disabling 3D _and_ 2D acceleration in the virtual machine fixed the
issue. Then I re-enabled both of them and the VM could work, at least
once. It will probably start to crash and trigger the issue some time
soon at one of the next boots. Until then
I restored my old sane VM. In the meantime the kernel was updated to
3.2.0-25.
Then I could run my VM succesfully.
And then, now the issue appeared again.
I cannot test the previous kernel version. (previous to the one where the issue
first appeared).
When I boot, if I choose previous linux

Almost certainly it started after updating some packages (which may or
may not be a coincidence, since there are updates almost every day) but
I have no idea which ones (I remember the Update Manager popping up
recently and I always accept all the updates), but certainly not right

It appears you are running version: 3.2.0-24.39 Can you test the

Sorry I can't.
I've already deleted the broken VM and right now I'm reimporting a backup of it
I had done previous to the disaster so that I can start to work with it again.
If the restored VM still causes the crash, then I'll try the previous
kernel (assuming I have the option to boot with the
