The error message indicates that your chip is unsupported, but the 7603 chip
has been supported since 2008. I'm guessing you've managed to destroy your
system configuration somehow, i e, this is not a generic Ubuntu problem.
Can you confirm? It should work correctly from a Live-CD.

I had sound from version 10.04 on. Even on version 12.04 LTS I had sound
for a while, then it stopped working without any reason about two weeks
ago.
I didn't install anything new or make any changes in settings. Only the
updates suggested on automatic update manager.
