This seems to be a problem in gconf and not gnome-app-install. So
reassigning.
Perhaps you have got a file destruction. Try to reinstall python-gconf.
You can use Synaptic or the command line:
sudo apt-get install python-gconf

oops i see that 1 hour ago version 0.3.29 of gnome-app-install was
released,,, (though i don't see it in Synaptic)...
Its my first bug report and i'm really new to ubuntu/linux so sorry for that :)
lets hope the new version solves my issue
