In Gutsy (2.6.22-14-generic) running gnumeric 1.7.11 (reinstalled today, just
in case) I get
"Unsupported file format" when I try to open an xls file.
Several other strange behaviours:
- no listing of xls files as spreadsheets
- "Help/About" does not work
I'm not sure why Julian if finding it "
Fixed in Gutsy. But I believe that Feisty still exhibits this problem
** Changed in: gnumeric (Ubuntu)
Status: Confirmed => Fix Released

gnumeric crashes opening .xls files

Fixed with Ubuntu Gutsy RC, and Gnumeric 1.7.11
A workaround for the above problem was to install gnumeric-gtk which
allowed you to open xls files, but then not use the gnueric extra
plugins du eto dependencies.
But anyway, fixed using standard gnumeric package only in Ubuntu Gutsy.

Probably fixed. Does this still occurs with recent releases? If so, a
sample xls file would help...

I get the same problems whenever I open any xls files in Gnumeric.
Its quite frustrating, as opening xls files is one one Gnumerics main
strengths !
Unfortunately, I have to go back to Windows to use Gnumeric rather than
Feisty.
Info - Running Feisty full version
and files created in MS Office 2
