I think I had the same problem the start up progress bar with ubuntu
logo was not looking "pretty" I tried changing different settings in
xorg.conf but no change. Then I looked at usplash.conf and it was set to
1900x1200 thinking this was the problem I reduced it to 1600x1200 no

Sorry about not getting back to you. I've been rather busy the last few
weeks.
I appended lapic pci-assign-busses to the kernel parameters and booted.
Still got the same problem.
Then I ran dmesg, sudo lspci -v, and sudo lspci -vv.
I have attached the outputs of these commands in this post and

This is weird. I would expect -- if you are running framebuffer and your
card supports at least 1024x768 -- that 'vga=792' would do the trick
(BTW, this is 1024x768, 16M colours). And the dmesg output you show does
not show a framebuffer device in use -- the console is a standard 24x80.

I am not sure whether this will solve your problem, but can you try
installing "915resolution" package and reboot and see whether usplash

The different modes are:
0 0F00 80x25
1 0F01 80x50
2 0F02 80x43
3 0F03 80x28
4 0F05 80x30
5 0F06 80x34
6 0F07 80x60
None of those mode allow usplash to be bigger than 640x480
The output of lsmod | grep fb is:

fbcon
Can you paste here the list of modes available to you ?
Also please try them and let us know which all works for you ?
Please paste the output of the following command also.
