This is a new issue, laptop boots just fine with 12.04 LTS. This could be also something in the network-manager or modem-manager, as in the 12.04 LTS the broadband does not work as it uses the usb ethernet and the modem requires some AT commands to be sent in order to initialize it. In the Quantal
