Re: #8, I was seeing this problem with development quantal releases on
my x220t which doesn't have a WWAN modem, so I don't think that's the
issue.
Due to this and other issues, I eventually removed the quantal install
and did a fresh install of the final release when it came out. I've been

Ok - I have a possible explination of why this problem is not more
widespread.
My Ubuntu 12.10 x64 system, clean install was booting just fine... until
i started to activate the Mobile Broadand (GSM) connection.

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest
upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug
report[0]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the
issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

This is a new issue, laptop boots just fine with 12.04 LTS.
This could be also something in the network-manager or modem-manager, as
in the 12.04 LTS the broadband does not work as it uses the usb ethernet
and the modem requires some AT commands to be sent in order to
initialize it. In the Quantal
