I have a Asus G75VW and I've tried 12.04 13.10 and the F5 F6 for
screen brightness doesn't work.
So Ubuntu can't fix this for us, we have to chase this after Upstream?
Personally I thought a big point to Ubuntu was to make for easier end-
user usage and support, so I don't think the end-user

Got it almost working on elementary OS Lune (based on Precise).
Used to modify /etc/default/grub and xorg.conf on my previous installs,
but brightness controls would only work after resuming from suspend.
I did a new install, and simply installed the latest Nvidia driver in
the repos (319), as

@Christopher: I ended up giving the G75 to my wife, and I got a System76
Bonobo Extreme, pre-installed with Ubuntu. Everything works as it should
on that puppy. :)

Oh the horror... Guess what? What ever upgrade came down the pipe
earlier today did not seem to have survived a reboot. What a damn

Ubuntu 12.10 and Nvidia 304.50, but should also work with ubuntu 12.04
and Nvidia 304.48:

Guys, I found the old bug #726692 (which had been even been filed by
myself) which contains a fix at least for my hardware (which is not an
Asus but a MacBook Pro, see comment #8).
The fix for me is to add this line in xorg.conf:
Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1

a...@vger.kernel.org anyway, so it's maybe not crucial to be 100% sure

I think the problem is outside the scope of nVidia's drivers. It seems
to be an issue of a lack of driver for the screen brightness control
itself and the ACPI keys on the laptop. Those keys were dead weight on
Windows until I installed ASUS's ACPI driver.

buttons, wifi on/off, suspend, switch monitors, turn off monitor, audio,
and even calling up the calculator with Fn+NumEnter works.

defaults matching the settings mentioned in that Gentoo thread with no
luck. I would not take this as gospel though since I don't feel that I'm
terribly competent with kernel building.
