Looks like both problems were related to the fact that I used update-
manager for 3 years to update between versions.
I made fresh 8.10 install and sleep/wake-up works fine for me now.
Regarding sound button problems I've reported bug #290636 which has also

It's best if bug reports target one specific issue. So let's focus on
the suspend/resume issue here. Is this still an issue with the final
release for Intrepid? If so, can you attach the output of 'sudo lspci

It came again
After working correctly for approx. 10 times (10 reboots and several sleeps per
boot) it came again.
