issue has long since been addressed, and this bug report has been just
accumulating stray bugs with similar sounding symptoms. Normally not a

I have to say I'm confused about what you said earlier about starting a
"clean" new bugreport. I did that (bug #195051) and it seems like you
didn't even had a look at it.
Then after nobody answered to it, I started the one over at fd.o and this one

when the system freeze, also the keyboard is frozen, so it's not possible to
switch to another virtual terminal... but if you have another pc you can
connect via ssh to the frozen one.. are you sure it's the same bug even if
you were able to go to another vt?

I'm glad to hear that you're having better luck with the proprietary ATI
drivers, but this doesn't constitute a bug fix. The problem is know to
exist specifically in the free xserver-xorg-video-ati driver. Like
Nicolas mentioned, it would probably be helpful to post feedback on the

I am on latest Hardy and I can confirm that bug is GONE! :-) I am sure
that it was related to proprietary ATI driver. This is a history about
my experience:
1) Enabling compiz was freezing my computer. Neither mouse nor keyboard does
not work. Only remote connection or Reset button working. :-( I

with some of the most common hardware configurations, like ATI graphic
cards. Ubuntu is brilliant in so many areas, but is inferior in the most

- Any ongoing animation freeze in place, sometimes with graphical glitch

I can confirm a similar issue on a fresh installation of Gutsy. I have
the ATI card FireGL V7200 and dual monitors. I cannot set a higher
resolution than 800x600 on these screens without using the proprietary
ATI drivers. Even the drivers in the Restricted Manager or in Synaptic

Just tried out Hardy Alpha 3. Unfortunately the issue is still there. It

I am having the same problem. Travelmate 4670, Intel Centrino Duo and
ATI mobility x1400
I can consistantly reproduce this by starting a session from GDM, then opening
an xterminal and typing

Hi !
I had this problem under gutsy. I upraded to hardy alpha1 and it's gone
: no more freeze so far !!
You may want to install the Xserver from hardy and see if it helps

It might be useful to install xserver "dbg" packages (search for dpkg in
synaptic and install X related dbg packages), then use gdb as instructed
on http://www.x.org/wiki/Development/Documentation/ServerDebugging from
another machine and get a backtrace. This is of course only if you think

Hello, I switched to the open source radeon driver and I noticed one
slight difference in the random freezes (which still occur as I
suspected). Now with the open source driver, I have the ability to move
the mouse upon lock up, but that is it. No ctrl+alt+backspace, nothing.

With Compiz disabled, running TORCS, an OpenGL racing car game, I have
experienced the same screen freeze. The mouse can move, but clicking doesn't
do anything. I am unable to kill the X server with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace or
switch to a different virtual console with Ctrl-Alt-F1.

I experience this sort of behaviour on a regular basis using the open
source ati/radeon driver, on an Acer aspire 5500 with an ATI X700
Mobility GPU (64MB video RAM).
The problem is *far more frequent* with compiz (or beryl) enabled,
however it has happened once or twice with all compositing windo
