The trackpoint and the related two buttons were not working after boot. My
laptop is ThinkPad T430u running kernel 3.8.0-19-generic on Ubuntu 13.04 -
amd64.
When I use xinput list, neither the trackpoint nor the extra button is
in the result. After rebooting, the

I ran into the same problem today; the trackpoint and the related keys
for left, middle and right click between keyboard and touchpad were not
working anymore after a cold boot on my Thinkpad X230 running Kernel
3.5.0-26-generic on Ubuntu 12.10-amd64.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.8 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both
the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.
