Upgrade to Gutsy if you can, and consider Hardy once it's stable...
Hardy+1 may even be the best release we'll have seen in a while, since
Linus has given kernel 2.6.25 a coveted weasel series name:
http://kerneltrap.org/Linux/2.6.25-rc2_A_Winner
Unfortunately I doubt we'll see 2.6.25 in Hardy.
So,
Does anybody knows any solution ?

Some colleagues of mine reported that disk io performance of Ubuntu 7.10
(ie, kernel 2.6.22) was much nearer that of 6.10. Basically, Ubuntu
7.04, or more accurately, kernel 2.6.20, was a bit of a lemon.

kernel 2.6.20 disk write performance much slower than 2.6.17
Hello Guys,
Does anybody thinking about solving a problem ?
I would like to migrate from 6.10 to 7.10 and i can't because of using as
VMware Server guest my corporate win xp.
Any answer will be better than no answer... :)

It seems that the problem may be related to the fact that the IDE drives are
now handled by the SATA drivers and thus in some cases hdparm can't set options
correctly on some drives.
As i said i have 2 IDE drives in my computer one issue slow down the other not
so feel free to ask me any output

I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to blame libata, since I first
noticed the problem with a 3ware SATA RAID card (model 9650SE).

I have similar problems with 2.6.20-16 kernel. I have 2 IDE drives one
issues slowdown the other not. It really sound like a kernel issue
because i never observed slowdown before on this drive.

Same here.
I was running Ubuntu 6.10, and everything worked fine. Then, after upgrading to
7.10, VMware began to run slow due to excessive hard disk activity.
I recorded some statistical data with dstat when starting up a virtual machine
and I get about 50% of cpu wait on computer. See
Thanks for the information and graphs Stephan. I'm glad I'm not the only
one seeing these problems. There's also a thread on VMware's forums
about this:

So is this purely a kernel issue, that should be apparent when running

This bug does not appear to be Ubuntu-specific. I set up the same test
rig with Debian 4.0, running kernel 2.6.18, and the performance was
acceptable. When I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.20, performance suffered
in a similar way as with the Ubuntu 7.04 setup.
Disk write performance under 2.6.20 may
