1. The screen is completely black after removing the proprietary driver and
reboot, can't see a mouse pointer either.

log it appears to be starting up correctly. A few questions.. Can you
switch VTs successfully when it fails? If so, does sudo service lightdm
stop then sudo service lightdm start correct it? Do you see a mouse
pointer or is it
