System crashes when starting Firefox and/or Thunderbird

are these lines:

Here is a /var/log/dmesg file as it was immediately after a system crash
and cold boot (see under the line of asterisks below). Following this, I
included the endings of two other dmesg files, showing what came after
the line, Bluetooth: BNEP socket layer

The only changes to the system, since recent updates, is that the kernel
is now 3.8.0-22 generic.
By the way, the file manager is Thunar 1.6.2.
