On a more positive note, Synaptic and Update manager have started
working again, without any change on my part, or explanation from the
system. On the other hand, if one or both of these programs are not
genuine (see above at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/synaptic/+bug/119650/comments/2
I've just noticed that somebody or something (Bug Reporting System?
Launchpad?) had added "UnreportableReason: This is not a genuine Ubuntu
package". Does this mean that my version of Synaptic is not the real one
that I should have?
Should I be worried about security? If my package manager is not
