Hi Phillip,
Mea Culpa.
I was testing an mSATA drive in a system with a faulty mSATA slot -
hence the error messages in the log.
I've since put it back in a system with a good mSATA slot (I only have
one drive to test with, so it bounces around a lot) and re-run the
installer and was unable to
You seem to have a bad sata cable.

This is the syslog from after several attempts at running the installer.
There's some errors in there about the drive not being detected,
apologies, that was a separate hardware issue I was trying to
troubleshoot.

And here was a message I haven't seen before trying to run the
installer:

This is the syslog file from the system's initial boot, where the drive
came up as /dev/sda. This was, boot to LiveCD, select try ubuntu and
get to the desktop. I have a few more attachments to follow.

And, lastly, got this message after one of the errors from the
installer, for some reason it couldn't submit a report on ubiquity?
I will be attempting to run the installer again from another system,
where I won't have the same hardware issue as shown in the second syslog

I booted an install USB to do a clean install of 14.04 (had moved the
drive to a different system) and told ubiquity: erase disk and install
ubuntu and use LVM
You tried to install grub to a logical volume. You can't do that. You
need to install grub to the drive ( /dev/sda ) instead.

hello,
after I was unable to delete the partitions and create my own partitioning, I
went back and selected the installer's option to 'erase Ubuntu and install'
with LVM checked. in that case, the installer then tried to install to the
volume instead of creating a whole new structure. should
