Version 1.0.9 has now been released (it is in Ubuntu 14.10 which I am
using). Are you able to test if it crashes in this new version? Are you
able to attach a small example file that causes the crash?

Now that I try, via File->OpenFolder in Gnome-mplayer, the mp4 file is
greyed out and not possible to select. But it can be played via
File->OpenRecent
So there is definitely something strange in Gnome-mplayer.
I have not tweaked the system or installed some extra package, only
installed Lubuntu

I did not notice that particular thing, but yes, you are right, that was
how I started gnome-mplayer the first time. Afterwards I started it from
the terminal window or from pcmanfm.

After logout and also after reboot of the installed system, I could play the
video in Openbox, and in a Lubuntu session. Was it a
temporary error, that occurs during the first login after installation?
Please test it in your computer or VM, and add 'affects me too' if that
is the case.
