Thanks everyone for narrowing it down to this patch.
The root issue appears to be that 132 modifies the ABI just slightly,
which is fine for open source drivers since they are rebuilt, but for
closed source drivers like -nvidia (and presumably others??) it leads to
this crash.

manual-redirect Composite windows so that they do not clip sibling or

My opinion:
Patch pros:
- This patch fixes 'something'.
Patch cons:
- This patch breaks all (?) setups with Nvidia 8xxx hardware and Compiz Fusion
software
My opinion: if it is not known what this patch fixes, it should be
dropped. If it is known, let the popularity-contest decide.

At this point, I think whatever the patch is supposed to fix can't
possibly be worse than the side effects of the patch itself.

I've seen on various mailing lists users of fedora core complaining of
this bug since January of this year. So I don't think nvidia is going to
feel any urgency implementing a fix.
I'm happy to test debian packages BTW, if there is any further need.

Well this got more complicated... apparently this patch has gone
upstream, and is required to make a few new things function. I was
skimming the update/patch logs. This patch was removed early July (13th-
ish?) and reinstated the 15th "fixed" no specific mentions of nvidia,
but it was removed for s
Sorry, this was reinstated the *25th*, not the 15th.

Yes, I can also confirm Greg's findings. Without the patch, everything
works fine. But I don't have any clue what that patch means. There I
have a NVidia GeForce 8400M, also with 100.14.11 driver from ubuntu
packages.

I can confirm Greg's findings. Just skipping the patch "132_composite-
no-clipping.diff" every OpenGL-based program I tried (glxgears, lowfat,
blender, gl-gst-player, neverball) did not crash Xorg anymore. This was
done on a GeForce 8800 GTS using the 100.14.11 driver (installed via the

I started doing builds this evening to test it and found that removing
132_composite-no-clipping.diff from the build does prevent the crash
from occuring.
