I tried raising this issue on bugzilla.gnome.org, but their opinion is that it
is not a GNOME Shell problem (Comment #7) since the indicator-multiload graphs
are displayed in a panel:

I'm sorry but there is not much I can do. If Gnome Shell does no longer
display the graphs, then this is a bug in Gnome Shell.

oops .. I was wrong
The indicator-applet from the ppa is displayed once I have started it
manually. Then the setting autostart on takes and the applet stays
visible across reboots (with persistence :-)).

Just tried it again (on a completely different system) - the indicator
is not displayed. I had troubles adding the ppa
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:~indicator-multiload/stable
