I'm seeing a frozen mouse pointer on startup, This happens in about one

The mouse is a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

Neither of my suggestions above worked. After updating my BIOS and
setting the kernel options acpi=noirq pci=noacpi, I got rid of the
lockups.

I'm having the exact problem. About 1 out of every 2 boot-ups the mouse
is frozen. The only way to recover is to unplug and replug it back into
the USB port.
Consider this comment a vote for a fix.

Sorry about that misinformation.
Shortly after I wrote that report, my mouse stopped working again. :-(
I now tried:
options usbcore old_scheme_first=Y use_both_schemes=N autosuspend=-1
The file you have to put that line is called /etc/modprobe.d/options!!
/etc/modutils seems to be obsolete
I've got the same problem after upgrading to 2.6.22-14-generic.
The mouse just stops working and I get the following line to dmesg:
usb 1-2.2: device descriptor read/64, error -110
I've put the line
option usbcore old_scheme_first=y
to /etc/modutils/options and haven't got the error again.

One thing I just noticed.
When the gnome login dialog comes up the mouse pointer is not initially
frozen. If I move the mouse as the login comes up, the pointer will
shift a few cm across the screen. It will then freeze.
I estimate that this frozen pointer occurs in 1 or 2 out of every ten

For comparison, I'm also attaching an xorg.o.log and a dmesg from a working
