[Bug 134938] Re: nvidia-glx-config makes the x-server crash (Tribe 5)

2007-08-29 Thread John M
Since I needed to re-install Feisty anyway (because of issues related to Norton Partition Magic and gparted), I thought of giving Gutsy a try and maybe helping by submitting but reports and all that. I really don't care that much about nvidia not working properly (and other issues related to synap

John: Fair enough (I know about the difference between nv and nvidia - my aim wasn't to help you workaround the problem insomuch as have you reproduce the problem so it could be properly diagnosed). I would have liked to have seen the log and known exactly how the drivers were installed as this

2007-08-28 Thread John M
As I said before, I renamed it *when* I copied it to my home folder. The problem with nv versus nvidia was the opposite: either restoring a backup of xorg.conf that includes nv instead of nvidia, or just by changing that word (nvidia) in the xorg.conf file, solves the problem with the x-server. W

John: If you renamed it (removing the .old extension but leaving it in the same direcotry) and then started X the new X would have overwritten the log. Any chance you could *back up* your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change nv to nvidia (I am of course assuming you know how to use the recovery mode an

That's the only one I found back then. The suffix was .old, but I changed it when I copied it to my home folder. So, sorry if it's not helpful at all. Another thing I found, though, is that the "dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" command doesn't work as expected ---i.e., back in Feisty, I had

John: That doesn't look like a log from a failed attempt to use the nvidia binary drivers... If you are swtiching configs and restarting X you may find the older log is renamed to .old on the end. If you can upload the log from the failed attempt to use the binary driver that would be helpful.
