I tried it in 2.3.1 as well; the multiple-names thing still happens.
Took another screenshot with many copies of the name in the status bar.

Wrong behavior when editing the na
I haven't been able to reproduce the first behavior you described (with
the arrows), but the second one definitely happens.
To clarify: Open an instant message window with a buddy who has a buddy
icon. Double-click twice on their name/alias, and it will turn to an
editable text box. While it is in
