It is recommended that you use compizconfig-settings-manager instead.
gnome-compiz-manager no longer ships in Ubuntu post-gutsy.

Until now all comments here look very much like Bug #118948,
but the topic (and most of the original report) are maybe a different
issue.

I have the same problem gnome-compiz-manager seems to install fine, but
it wont open. Also it leaves a zombi compiz proccess. Theres compiz
(zombi), compiz and compiz.real.

I have similar problems with my two computers, booth fully patched
Gutsy, tribe 5.
When I first start "GL Desktop" nothing happens
Second try I get two GL Desktop settings windows and the settings seems messed
up since the last time i configured it
Third try it's start in Tray Icon-mode but I can
I just noticed when playing with above "GL Desktop" and "Appearance" that when
"GL Desktop" fails
to popup its dialog.. it also prevents the "logout" dialog to display when
selecting it after this situation.
Only when in "System->Preferences->Appearance" the setting "Desktop Effects" is
turned
