I also have the wretched Optiplex 320. hpet=disable was enough to get it

What does that do exactly? And what is the problem with this system
configuration?

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

I've downloaded the Alpha 4 now. I still need the "hpet=disable" switch

When I leave that option out, the screen blanks upon boot, I see a

Hi Leann,
I am in the process of downloading the Intrepid Alpha 3. I just wanted
to report on the status in Hardy as experienced by me. I am using Grub2
to boot, as Grub will generally fail; at least I could not get it to
work, not matter what I did.
I am currently appending "hpet=disable pnpbios
Hi Stephan,
Thanks for the feedback. Would you be willing to test the latest
Intrepid Alpha and confirm this is an issue for the upcoming release?
The reason I ask is that Intrepid is actively being developed at the
moment so fixes will likely be made there first. If the issue still
exists, coul

Using the boot option 'acpi=off' helped me boot the latest gutsy kernel
(2.6.22-14-generic). However the kernel also complains about the PnP
BIOS and suggests adding 'pnpbios=off', which makes the message
disappear. 'hpet=disable' doesn't have any effect on my computer.

I have this exact same issue and machine. I was attempting install from

Adding the hpet=disable to the kernel options from the main screen does

It seems to be a kernel thing and doesn't seem related to the message.
