Note, with this Vivid kernel, you need to install both the linux-image

just booted the system using inux-
image-4.0.0-04rc2-generic_4.0.0-04rc2.201503031836_i386.deb and
it seems to work (writing from it now). Further tests will have to wait
until tomorrow evening...

- normal boot freezes as with 3.19.0-12
- booting with 'quiet splash' removed shows bootlog output, but too fast to
read, ends in frozen login screen (switching to other consoles using
Ctrl-Alt-F... does not
Try v4.0-rc2 too in the meantime. There is one suspicious commit that
might help here..

Just did another test. Selecting recovery mode for kernel 3.19.0-12 and
then resume seems to work and I could log in successfully, though
resolution is then limited to max. 1024x768 and graphics is extremely
slow (resolution should be max. 1280x800 for my nb).

Here are my testing results with a Dell Latitude D630, Intel Mobile 965

V4.0-rc1 kernel fails to boot
lp1440724 kernel boots but with only 1024x768s fixed screen resolution.
The Latitude D630 is a 1440x900 LCD display.

I can also confirm this problem for an older Fujitsu Siemens notebook
(Intel Core Duo T2300, 1 GiB RAM, BIOS v. 1.20, Intel Mobile 945GM/GMS,
943/940GML945). Kernel 3.19.0-11 runs fine, 3.19.0-12 freezes during
boot with exactly the same symptoms as described above.
Removing 'quiet splash' did not
BTW, this affects i386 Mobile 915GM as well.

Same here, on two laptops, one the same Dell D630 as the OP, as well as
a basically identical D830. However, editing the boot parameters from
the grub menu does not allow me to get to a login screen, and I am
