Now working for me using the latest ATI driver downloaded from envy and not
from the official repositories.
Also the problem was specific just for the ATI cards. There was no problem with
the NVIDIA cards.
Have you tried it with the default fglrx driver from the repositories to see if
working

Just to report that I installed also gutsy on my desktop pc and it works fine.
The desktop pc has an NVidia 6600GT Graphics card but my laptop has an ATI
X700...
So probably it is a specific error for ati/gutsy/amd64/googleearth and
not a gutsy/amd64/googleearth problem...

I was fully up to date when I reported the bug.
Actually now I did a dist-upgrade (and reboot because it installed a new
kernel) and the problem still exists :(
I am on amd64 as the title already says...
Exactly with the same steps I have no problem on my Kubuntu Feisty 64bit
installation.
