I have a very similar problem. I got a wlan card with rtl8180L chipset. If I try to get an IP via DHCP, the system freezes and the numlock and capslock leds start to blink. I am using ubuntu gutsy. uname -a: Linux mal-2 2.6.22-12-generic #1 SMP Sun Sep 23 18:11:30 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux lspci

Btw, blacklisting the r8180 driver, and installing ndiswrapper and the Realtek driver for RTL8180 works OK. You only need, after installing the realtek driver in ndiswrapper to invoke: # ndiswrapper -d 1799:6001 net8180 to make the driver to recognize the card. Cheers -- Hard freeze on
