Not much I can add technically, but wanted to add that the problem is
similar here with ATI card on Compaq nx8220.
I can after much 'twiddling' get the projector to work and mirror the
laptop panel using displayconfig-gtk, but it kicks my laptop panel into
640x480.
I also can't switch off the lap

Please take a look the link above, it also contains a short description

I guess the main problem is that xrandr 1.2 isn't supported in
displayconfi-gtk until now.

displayconfig-gtk also lists drivers which are not installed. It seems
to have a hard-coded list instead of looking up the really installed
drivers in the appropriate directory. So new/third-party drivers will
probably not get listed by displayconfig-gtk.

xserver-xorg-video-intel most probably needs to provide a transitional
package named xserver-xorg-video-i810-modesetting with no files and
dependency on xserver-xorg-video-intel so that the xserver-xorg-
video-i810-modesetting package gets properly replaced.

Another problem of displayconfig-gtk is also that with the intel driver
one can only select one of the two screens as display, one cannot choose
the clone mode (for the projector) or dual-head mode. These modes are
always grayed out.

Another remaining problem:

Now I got the external monitor working:
I replaced the i810 by the intel driver (the daily updates during Gutsy
development did not do this automatically) by doing
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel
which automatically uninstalled the oid xserver-xorg-
video-i810-modesetting package.
Sebastian Heinlein, thanks for the tips. Is there also a possibility to
make an entry in xorg.conf to have the projector (VGA connector) active
by default?
K, your tipp in your last comment does not work for me.

Here are two xorg.conf files generated by displayconfig-gtk. They are
both set up with only one monitor (the internal display of the laptop),
one with the intel and one with the i810 driver. Both do not work at all
for me. In both cases X does not start and Bulletproof X gets triggered.

Kamppeter, I'm not 100% sure how I managed to achieve this but you could
try the following:
1)Disable one of the screens from displayconfig-gtk (a.k.a screens and graphics)
2) Go to terminal and do sudo gnome-display-properties
3)Choose the desired resolution

K, how do you get the internal display and the external monitor to work

I have the same problem with intel945 G (or something similar) graphics
chip. I have a laptop with 12.1 inch screen and an external 19 inch LCD
monitor. I can make them both work on the same resolution but I need
different ones.

Same problem for me. displayconfig-gtk is unable to apply the
resolutions I want. I spend 2 hours last night and never get a result
with this tool.
The test button doesn't work, when I hit it, X restart and I fall back
to the login screen with wrong resolution.
