Well, after upgrading to 8.04 not even the backport to the 6.6 version
of the ati-driver works anymore. The deb-file can't be injected... So I
am left with 800x600 in vesa-mode right now. Any comments, hints or
suggestions?

Hello,
I can confirm problems with the ati driver in gutsy, namely the
xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.7.195-1ubuntu2, using a Radeon 7000 VE.
The log file without using a xorg.conf can be seen attached. Also in my case,
downgrading to xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.6.3-2ubuntu6_i386 solves the problem.

Can you please try adding:
Option "AGPMode" "1"
to the device section of xorg.conf?
Otherwise, I see the "theatre" stuff in the log which I am not so
familiar with. Can you provide the 6.6.3 log for comparison?

Okay, I've installed the ati-driver:
xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.7.196+git20071117-0ubuntu0tv1_i386.deb
Unfortunately, no X came up... The log-file is atached. And yes, I
didn't use any xorg.conf...

Please try the test driver from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XorgOnTheEdge
and attach the corresponding Xorg.0.log, without using any xorg.conf.

Thank you for your comments and hints. I already tried to a

The live-cd failed to properly set up a X-Session, too...
I haven't tried the "on-the-edge"-drivers yet. I will come

My problem with the generic ati driver after upgrading to Gutsy is the
screen going absolutely haywire from login onwards. So I can't see a
thing, or should I say I can see plenty but of course can't make sense
of a display rapidly moving in diagonal lines. I have had to revert to
the old vesa driv
