It might be useful for sufferers to try the Magic SysRq key when a lock
up occurs.

Ctrl-Alt-Backspace isn't the only key combination that may help.

gutsy amd64 freeze crash lockup

Yo
During the last days I've focused my attention on the USB hotplug
malfunction (as of point 10.). I came to the conclusion that:
13. freezing of Gutsy on my computers, completely disappears if the USB
v2.0 controller is disabled through the BIOS setup, at the same time USB
hotplug works OK through
One again, and this seems to be of good reference.
12. Kubuntu Gutsy (and I believe this is valid for all Ubuntu flavours)
works fine on a fresh, default install so far no update is made
I've a fresh install (from i386 CD image and on-line PC) working for about two
days without freeze.

11. Tested older kernels taken from Kubuntu v7.04 repository and proved
as working with no problems on that distribution version; on v7.10 no
change, freezing continues as before.

gutsy amd64 freeze crash lockup

You received this bug notification because
Point 3. of my precedent resumee has now been overridden. Freezing has been
observed in the following situations:
a. while working on KDE & Gnome
b. in a VT window under X
c. in a VT after boot without starting the Xserver (startx)
I could personally verify point c. case also, on a fresh Kubuntu
Looking at all the comments in various forums and bug#, the freeze fenomena:
1. doesn't seem to relate to CPU type, nor to SATA, Graphics card, MB, memory
q.ty, or other hardware connected cases.
2. seems to inflict the Xserver only, and blocking the entire PC, basic VT too,
not keyb and mouse on
