Make sure you have linux-image-generic and nvidia-glx-new installed, and
before that clean any leftovers from the nvidia.com driver. Not a bug.

This sounds like you're having leftovers from the nvidia.com driver.
Unfortunately I can't provide any help on that.

Here's what I have:
ls -l /ubuntu/lib/linux-restricted-modules/2.6.22-14-generic/nvidia
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 125968 2007-11-01 08:20 nv-i2c.o
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 29096 2007-11-01 08:20 nvidia.mod.o
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7779664 2007-11-01 08:20 nv-kernel.o
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 326100
RichardNeill, please check if there is any other file than the following in
"/lib/linux-restricted-modules/2.6.22-14-generic/nvidia/":
* nv-i2c.o
* nv-kernel.o
* nv-vm.o
* nv.o
* nvidia.mod.o
* os-agp.o
* os-interface.o
* os-registry.o
If not, please try reinstalling the linux-restricted-
yes.
I did check the obvious by doing an rmmod nvidia after every update,
just to make certain that the nvidia module that was currently loaded
always corresponded to the nvidia driver that was currently installed.
Any other tests I can do?
Richard

I sometimes get:
NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 1.0-9639, but this kernel
module has the version 100.14.23. Please make sure that this kernel
module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version. This is
on a fully updated 64-bit system as of a couple of days ago.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description
didn't include enough information.
Can you see any useful information on /var/log/syslog about the nvidia
kernel module?
