I also had the same problem. I'm using Lucid Lynx. Angband had
installed perfectly under Intrepid Ibex.
For my lucid install, I checked that the above .bmp files were installed
--they were. But the -g option did not use the tiles, program ran in
ASCII mode.

Ah, I was confused by your references to the ncurses interface. You were
talking about tiles mode, not x11 mode - sorry for the confusion.
According to http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/i386/angband/filelist,
the graphics tiles are included in the package:
/var/games/angband/xtra/graf/16x16.bmp

Thanks, but still does not work, even on Karmic.
Steps to reproduce this:
- sudo aptitude install angband
- angband -mx11
- observe only one window with ncurse interface.
- compare with the man page:
man angband
This version of Angband has been compiled with both ncurses and the X
