Tested on Karmic, the nVidia display settings only controls contrast
brightness, NOT the brightness of the backlight.
Also area where the SONY logo is very hot, suspecting the backlight is working

This bug is about Intel 965 graphics adapters. Yours is an nVidia, which is
handled by nvclock / smartdimmer.

Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
It is not possible to set the xrandr properties, so presumably a problem
with the new xserver-xorg-video-intel driver. This bug seems relevant:

This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration
architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know
