Intrepid installs 177.80 but be aware there are compatibility issues
with older cards (i.e. this driver only supports a limited set of more
recent nvidia hardware). The command "aptitude show nvidia-glx-177"
will give you the supported list.

open it up, Xorg spikes to 75% usage. But closing it lowering the using

Actually, I upgraded to intrepid and I installed the latest nvidia drivers. I
notice the same spike in xorg cpu usage every time I use firefox. I can barely
open the menus.

I'm using Hardy Alpha 5 and I'm also experiencing this bug on a Dell
Optiplex GX260, with integrated Intel video, so it's not just an nvidia
thing. It makes the desktop essentially useless because it's so slow
now.

one of the core is at 100% when I start moving 2D-Stuff around (like
cards in Freecell Solitair). Moving windows and icons is no problem,
maybe because they are accelerated by compiz via the GFX card. This bug

to a more usable state. Xorg now eats up about 0-50% of my CPU instead of over

For the reccord, I has an Nvidia 8400M GS on a Dell Vostro 1500 with 2GB
of ram, 1.4Ghz dual core CPU, sporting Compiz Fus
I tested that UseEvents before, but it didn't fix stuff.

Some people have recommended "UseEvents" "On" also, but that doesn't
work for me either. Xorg still spikes at time to about 90% cpu usage,
I've noticed it worse when firefox is running.

I too am seeing high processor usage with xorg. Although my system is a
ThinkPad T43 with ATi M300 ( and I have not loaded the ATi drivers,
unless Hardy did it for me ...). It get particularly bad when running a
browser ( opera or Firefox ). I am also not using compiz.

I just installed "Galeon 2.0.4" and there runs everything just fine.
Even the rendering of the website is now correct.

I don't doubt that compiz severely impacts this performance issue, but
turning off various screenlets (or all), freed my T61 cpu back to ~25%
or so at powersave cpu mode, much smoother cube animations now.

I have the same problems when CPU usage is always 85-95% when nothing is
running. Except the gnome-system-monitor. So I found out that it was
gnome-system-monitor that caused such high CPU usage in Xorg. I used the
command top in terminal while observing the system. As

I experienced this after upgrading to Hardy as well.
Adding the following to the "Device" section of my xorg.conf file brought Xorg
CPU usage back to a sane level:
Option "UseEvents" "True"

Adding Option "UseEvents" "True" to my device section seemed to bring Xorg down
to a more usable state. Xorg now eats up about 0-50% of my CPU instead of over
90%
For the reccord, I has an Nvidia 8400M GS on a Dell Vostro 1500 with 2GB
of ram, 1.4Ghz dual core CPU, sporting Compiz Fus
I tested that UseEvents before, but it didn't fix stuff.

Some people have recommended "UseEvents" "On" also, but that doesn't
work for me either. Xorg still spikes at time to about 90% cpu usage,
I've noticed it worse when firefox is running.

I can confirm this too. Dell vostro 1500, Intel core2duo 1.4GHZ, 2GB
ram, Nvidia 8400M GS, Nvidia beta driver from their website.
It could be related to firefox...

I can confirm this as well. AMD Phenom 9500, Geforce 8800GT, 2GB Ram and
one of the core is at 100% when I start moving 2D-Stuff around (like
cards in Freecell Solitair). Moving windows and icons is no problem,
maybe because they are accelerated by compiz via the GFX card. This bug
is really distur

MmmI just noticed one thing:
It seems that the Xorg cpu usage became high only when "system monitor"
is open.
when I close it, Xorg cpu usage returns low:

Flash sound hacks when i use firefox, scrolling. or change program

It seams that the top output copy I tock whas then the Xorg was low but it
usaly takes about 40%+ when i do something.

I too am seeing high processor usage with xorg. Although my system is a
ThinkPad T43 with ATi M300 ( and I have not loaded the ATi drivers,
unless Hardy did it for me ...). It get particularly bad when running a
browser ( opera or Firefox ). I am also not using compiz.
