I'm sorry, I didn't feel confident enough to do the git bisect.
But as I switched to the new intrepid release, the problem disappeared.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:
1) If you are comfortable
Hi Max,
Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks for testing the upcoming
Intrepid kernel, it sounds promising to have resolved the issue. I
agree that it would be great to isolate the patch which could be
backported to Hardy. How comfortable would you be performing a git
bisect to try and narrow
I am running now the 2.6.26-2 kernel from intrepid repository and the system
doesn't hang on boot.
So now it should just a matter of finding the right patch to solve this bug.

I recently updated from 7.10 to 8.04 running kernel 2.6.24-19.
My system hangs at the same point as described above. After about 5min
the boot process resumes and the system works stable.
Switching off ACPI solves the problem, but since my system is a laptop,
this isn't an option.

I just re-tested with 2.6.24-18 and the problem is reduced to the
following: the boot sequence hangs for about 15 seconds before saying:
[ 43.881057] Clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -1791762180 ns)
[ 43.885134] Time: acpi_pm clocksource has been installed.

After these messages my computer starts up as expected. So the bug is
only about the 15 second delay.

I installed linux-image-2.6.24-4-generic today (2.6.24-4.7) and couldn't
get to boot it at all. :-( With ACPI enabled it hangs at the same place
as it did before (see attached screenshot). With acpi=off and acpi=ht it
hung after detecting my CD drive.
I'm writing this on a kernel from the rt2x00-d
Hi Felix,
Testing the upstream kernel is a big help, thanks for doing that. You
commented that vanilla 2.6.24-rc6 boots fine with ACPI. It looks like
the Ubuntu kernel was rebased with the upstream vanilla kernel
2.6.24-rc7 for the Ubuntu kernel release 2.6.24-4.6 (for release notes,

not fixed in 2.6.24-3 nor 2.6.24-4 :-(
Can I provide any more information to help track this bug down?
