Works in Karmic, but not perfectly: it needs two taps on the "Eject"
button. The first one unmounts the volume, the second one ejects the
loaded DVD. This being on an Studio XPS 16", which shouldn't matter
(also slot loaded, and similar hardware).

$ killall gnome-settings-daemon
$ xev
With xev running and gsd dead, press the eject key. If it registers an
eject key event in the xev terminal window, that means it's a software

It's possible to use the dev.cdrom.lock=0 setting, a udev rule and
script to make this work correctly. The solution is described on the
Arch wikis here and seems to work fine on my XPS M1330:

With some refinement,
I know this bug can be resolved because when I first got my laptop--
preloaded with Ubuntu 8.04 by Dell--this button worked just fine. The
CD would unmounted, and then ejected.
Maybe someone over at Dell knows how to solve this problem?

This bug needs to be opened back up because while changing the above
sysctl setting does work, it doesn't bother to unmount the disc before
it ejects it, so the disc needs to be reinserted to unmount it properly.

nautilus and unmounting (or doing it through terminal) we might as well
just right click and go to ejecthaving an eject button which both

unmount a CD and then push the eject button, but a user from another
operating system used to the intended functionality of their "Eject my

The problem is that Windows doesn't "lock" media. For a read-only
filesystem, like a CD, that's fine. The link I posted above shows how
to auto-unmount removed media but, it would need to modified to only do
that for read-only media.
