It's possible to use the dev.cdrom.lock=0 setting, a udev rule and script to make this work correctly. The solution is described on the Arch wikis here and seems to work fine on my XPS M1330: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HAL#Removing_USB_flash_causes_improper_unmount. With some refinement,
