I agree, this is gtkmathview problem, but when you just install older
gtkmathview there is no insert euqation.
Hezy, I looked at my abiword packages, and I have got, i've got abiword,
abiword-plugins from 2.6 and abiword-common from 2.4. I dont know how I
did that. But it working with insert
You should first uninstall your current libgtkmathview so type: sudo
apt-get remove libgtkmathview0c2a. It will force you to remove abiword-
plugins too. Then you install that .deb package. In synaptic (i dont
know how to do it terminal) find that libgtkmathview0c2a and in package
menu you should
Or just run dpkg -i thepackage.deb -- you can downgrade packages that
way.

doesn't have the equation option.
Alexander, I tried your way too - same result.

option. Add repository: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/abiword-

I had the same problem. I tried to get the latest stable version for
ubuntu from the www.abisource.com. It did not help. Then I install older
libgtkmathview0c2a (0.7.8-1) from
http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/libgtkmathview0c2a. It seems working

I confirm, it crashes.
May be perhaps related to kformula (koffice) problems with exporting formulas
to SVG (but perhaps not) -

I made mistake: I have Xubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) not 8.10 :)
I tried to update AbiWord to latest version (2.6.3) hoping it will fix
this problem. I followed http://abisource.com/wiki/Install_on_Ubuntu,
installed new abiword and abiword-plugin packages. It still doesn't
work. Only difference is that
I can confirm this. I'm running laptop with Celeron M, Ati Xpress 200m, 512 MB
RAM.
I have fresh install of Xubuntu 8.10 with all updates installed.
I can put simple things like a, a^b, but a= or \frac{}{} makes Abiword
crash.
