I think this bug is definitely fixed (or at least half-fixed).
I think the fact that you need an additional step in order to make ndiswrapper
load automatically is a good thing. This will make users try the windows driver
first, because there could be a kernel panic or an oops due to buggy window

I tried to install Ubuntu 6.06 on the same laptop (where previously v 5
was installed successfully, including the wireless network card), but
after a couple of hours stumbling around with the partitioner (guided or
manually) I decided to quit trying. The partitioner (incredibly slow)
could not find
can this be done so simply as to just add a new line, saying
"ndiswrapper" to the end of /etc/modules?
