I've also tried to play it in regular window mode. It works fine until
my mouse exits the window onto the gnome desktop. I can then put my
mouse back on the window to look around, but it doesn't not allow me to
enter any keyboard input to the game.

I have this problem as well. I tried removing the --quite command line

This is somewhat obvious, but have you tried disabling the screen saver?
Gnome-screensaver will lock tremulous up if it comes on when you are
playing.

The "real tjw-client" also did this. I switched to the trem-servers one
because I got an error: "A reliable command cycled out" so I did a
google search and that client prevented it. I tried doing an strace but
eventually the log file got 500MB in size and I still had no crash. I'll
try to pipe out
I couldn't find any information in the log file. I'll continue using
strace, but so far no hangs using strace =[

Get the real tjw-client from http://trem.tjw.org/backport/
The trem-servers people do weird things.
Also, start tremulous from the console and pipe the output to a file, something
like:
tremulous.x86 &> ~/tremulous.log
