I haven't had any success with audio either, I even tried SOF drivers.
Everything looks to be working on 20.04, so perhaps it is possible to backport
some changes or identify driver changes between 18.04 and 20.04.
However, I don't think I'll spend much more time on this.

Unfortunately I got no GPU driver working other than using nomodeset. First I
tried all different versions offered by the software and updates 'additional
drivers' tab. And I tried a selection of older drivers from the NVIDIA PPA, I
think I did not even get 390 to work. Each time I

I am in the same situation as you, since I also need to be on 18.04 for now.
I am having trouble with the display driver as well. My model is equipped with
an NVIDIA T500 (same as yours), but installing any NVIDIA display driver higher
than version 390 fails and drops be in tty mode.

Installing Ubuntu 20.04 LTS does solve the trackpad issue together with the GPU
driver and audio. Unfortunately for compatibility reasons I have to use 18.04
so I guess I'm stuck with a mouse for now.
