Sorry, I had loaded the page before Michael posted and didn't reload before
submitting my comment.
I guess best way is to first obtain the newest version of update-manager as I
described and then follow Michael's instruction.

I've been unable to recreate this bug using update-manager version
1:0.87.12 in Hardy Heron, too.
Chrigu, could you please recheck whether the problem still exists with the
current version of update-manager?
You can check your version of update-manager by executing "dpkg-query -W
update-manager"

could you please open a terminal window (e.g. gnome-terminal) and run
"update-manager" in it and paste the output of this command when the
error happens? It may output some more clues what goes wrong. Do you use
a special locale? Or a plain english setup?
